Items below a specified weight are exempt from hallmarking, so very lightweight items do not have to be hallmarked.
The exemption weights are:
- Gold – less than 1 gram
- Silver – less than 7.78 grams
- Platinum – less than 0.5 grams
- Palladium – less than 1 gram
Although these items do not need a hallmark they must still comply with the principles of the Hallmarking Act if they are to be described as precious metal .
For example an item weighing 4.5 grams and described as Sterling Silver must still have a composition of 925 ppt fine silver.
